CHANGING THE NAME OF OUR “NORMAL” 2in1 SHAMPOO TO “ALL HAIR TYPES”
Firstly we want to thank the people who reached out to us to point out how labelling things “normal” can be problematic. We hold our hands up and admit that we hadn’t thought about it beforehand and for that, we apologise. It is so commonplace in personal care products to use the word “normal” that when it came to naming our shampoo bars, we didn’t think anything of it to name them that way. However, we all know that just because something is commonly and widely used doesn’t make it okay! So we went about re-naming the shampoo bar and to do that we wanted to take into account the people who are already using the bar so through our stories we got lots of wonderful feedback which helped so much!
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
The language we use is incredibly important, as it shapes how we see the world, how we interact with each other and so much more. So if we can use language that helps create a more inclusive world, why wouldn’t we do it?
We should stop using the word “normal” to describe the traits of people and of course people in general. This is because the use of this word for people implies that an opposite exists, and so that some people can be “abnormal”. And that's just not on.
WHAT WE DID AND WHAT WE ARE DOING:
We took to our Instagram stories to ask you lovely people if you had any suggestions for alternative names and we also asked the people who had previously used the “normal” bar to describe their hair type. The results were that people used it successfully for lots of different hair types. This helped us come up with the new name of “All Hair Types”.
In anticipation of Brexit, we ordered a large number of cardboard boxes, we will use these up so as not to waste them, but have already changed it for our next packaging order. In the meantime, we’re changing the name on our websites and communicating the change on our social media platforms + on our blog
We want to thank again the people who brought this to our attention and all the people who responded to our stories!
